Empress Technical Support Corner:

Use of Empress Shared Memory on Linux 1.3 Kernels

In order to use Empress shared memory on Linux 1.3 distributions, (either a.out or ELF-format). the following variable must be set:

MSSHMLOCATION=0X40007000

This will change the starting location at the high end of memory where Empress searches for free memory.

This variable can be set in two ways:

  1. In the $MSPATH/custom/initfile for all users
  2. In the users environments

Example (in csh):

setenv MSSHMLOCATION 0X40007000

Please note as well that the variable MSSHMPROTECTION, if set in the shared memory partition file, can cause problems.

This should be unset within the database's tabzero file before shared memory is created.

This release note applies to Empress v6.8. Empress Release notes are available on the Empress Website to current Empress customers. Please contact sales@empress.com for the username and password.
