Two New Freeware Modules Announced for Spring Release:
Empress Tcl/Tk and Perl Interfaces

Coming this spring are two new exciting interfaces to the EMPRESS RDBMS: The Empress Tcl/Tk and Perl Interfaces.

Tcl/Tk is a simple yet powerful programming tool for writing X-window based applications which can now connect you to Empress multimedia databases.

The Tcl portion of the interface provides commands to connect applications to the Empress database, perform SQL operations and execute some database administration.

The Tk toolkit is an extension to Tcl with commands to create and configure widgets for displaying text, graphics, and facilities for window management. It allows rapid development of GUI applications.

The two modules combine to allow the user a flexible and convenient way to develop powerful window applications with connectivity to Empress databases.

The Perl utility language has become one of the most useful programming languages ever developed. As the number one alternative for ed, sed, [e.g.] rep, awk and shell scripts it was only natural for Empress to provide superior RDBMS functionality from within Perl.

The Empress Perl Interface is a database driver module which will allow users to access Empress databases through the Database Interface (DBI) and from within their Perl scripts. The Empress Perl Interface will enable the user to perform standard SQL operations on Empress databases.

The Empress Tcl/Tk and Perl Interfaces will be available as freeware from the Empress World Wide Web site at http://www.empress.com/.

The Empress Perl Interface requires recent releases of Perl (v5.002), the DBI (v0.65), and Empress RDBMS (v6.8).
